Before you fly
Visas, by passport.
Chinese passports
A visa on arrival at Dhaka airport, US$50, for up to 30 days, with a passport valid six months and a return ticket. For business, bring an invitation letter — and the inviting company must inform immigration in advance; we do that. Longer stays: a business visa of up to six months from the embassy.
Indian passports
Apply to the Bangladesh mission in India before you travel; we provide the invitation letter and check current processing times.
Pakistani passports
Apply before you travel; relations have eased and we check current processing for you.
Other passports
Many nationalities qualify for a visa on arrival for business or tourism; others apply in advance. We confirm yours before you book.
Visa rules change; we confirm yours before you book. Checked October 2026.
Safety
The honest picture.
Calmer, with caution
After the unrest of 2024 and the February 2026 election, travel advice for Bangladesh sits at 'exercise increased caution'. Business in Dhaka and Chattogram runs normally.
Demonstrations and strikes
Rallies and strikes (hartals) can close roads at short notice. We check the day's situation every morning and keep itineraries flexible.
Where we stay
Gulshan and Banani, Dhaka's diplomatic and business districts, with a car and driver for every journey.
Where we do not go
The Chittagong Hill Tracts need permits and the camps near Cox's Bazar are off our itineraries.
Getting there
Direct from China.
From Guangzhou
China Southern, US-Bangla and Biman fly direct to Dhaka — about four hours.
From Kunming and Beijing
China Eastern from Kunming (about 2½ hours); Air China and China Southern from Beijing.
Through the Gulf and Southeast Asia
Connections through Dubai, Doha, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok.
Inside Bangladesh
Dhaka to Chattogram is under an hour by air; the Padma Bridge has cut the drive to the south-west.
Where business happens
Five places to know.
Dhaka
The capital and the market: Gulshan and Banani for offices and buying houses, Motijheel for banks, and the city's electronics and phone markets.
Gazipur and Savar
The heart of the garment belt north of Dhaka, with the Dhaka EPZ — knit, woven and denim factories by the hundred.
Narayanganj
The river port south of Dhaka and the centre of knitwear.
Chattogram
The main seaport, the Chattogram EPZ and the new economic zone at Mirsarai.
Purbachal
Dhaka's new town and home of the exhibition centre built with China.
On the ground
How we run a Bangladesh week.
Dhaka traffic is among the world's slowest: two meetings a day, three at most, and stay near them.
The weekend is Friday and Saturday; Sunday is a working day.
The monsoon, June to October, floods roads; November to February is the best time to come.
First-time garment buyers do better through a buying house than direct; we introduce both.
Cash and cards in hotels; mobile money is everywhere but hard for visitors. We arrange taka on arrival.
A local SIM needs biometric registration with your passport; we set it up at the airport.
Guests from China
What our guests from China need to know.
A familiar partner
China built the Padma Bridge and the exhibition centre at Purbachal; Chinese engineers and businesses are a common sight.
WeChat works
WeChat works normally; local business runs on WhatsApp and Messenger, and we set up the groups.
Interpreters
Mandarin–Bangla interpreters are rare; we bring Mandarin–English interpreters and our own team.
Food
Food is halal and pork is rarely served; Chinese restaurants in Gulshan and Banani for the evenings.
Buddhist heritage
Paharpur's Somapura Mahavihara — a UNESCO site — was one of the great Buddhist monasteries of South Asia.
Factory audits
We arrange social-compliance and quality checks before you place an order.

Questions
Asked before every Bangladesh trip.
Should I go to factories directly or through a buying house?
First-time buyers usually do better through a buying house, which handles samples, quality and follow-up. We introduce both and you choose.
What minimum order should I expect?
It depends on the product and the factory; larger factories expect bigger runs. We shortlist factories that fit your volumes before you fly.
Is it safe?
Business travel in Dhaka and Chattogram runs normally. We stay in the business districts, check the situation every morning and keep plans flexible on days of rallies or strikes.
Can you help us sell in Bangladesh, not only buy?
Yes. Our Market Week meets distributors and retailers for brands entering the consumer market.
